CHITTAGONG, June 1: Tea-production in this region is quite satisfactory during the current year as the weather remains in favour.
The rates offered in auction are more than that of the previous year, sources said.
According to the tea gardens sources, production of tea entirely depends on nature. Adequate rainfall brings more production while less rainfall reduces the production of this extremely popular beverage.
At the beginning of the current season, the weather was a bit contrary but later it became favourable for production. Workers are engaged in the tea gardens on round the clock basis and a huge quantity of tea leaves of superior quality, are being processed in the machines.
Tea production was not satisfactory last year in Bangladesh and also in other tea-producing countries.
According to the concerned sources, 49.09 million kgs of tea leaves were sold in auction in Chittagong last year and the price per kg was more than Tk 95 on an average.
But because of the worldwide deficit in tea output last year its price was a bit high. With the increase in production this year, it is expected to regain its normal price.
Tea broker sources said tea leaves of superior quality are now arriving for auction.
The Pakistani buyers are likely to be encouraged more to participate in the auction. Buyers belonging to Afghanistan and other countries are also expected to activate their drives in the next auction to be held in Chittagong.
